As a key part of the residence life experience, our residence life curriculum serves to support your success. Here in the Residence Life Office, we make it our mission to create opportunities and show our support for you. We encourage you to have fun, learn new things, and connect with other people and communities.

Knowing that learning extends beyond the classroom, we believe that everyone’s residence experience can play a hugely important role in helping them develop life skills that will ensure continued success in the future. We want to support you to be as happy, healthy, and successful as possible as they start this new and exciting journey.

In Residence Life, we are committed to providing the best experience to all of our students. We do this through focusing on our four Education Priorities below:

Students together

More than Just Pizza Parties: Residence Life Educational Priorities

We support students in developing an understanding of social identities, values, beliefs, prejudice and discrimination. Students will consider how their actions impact others and be able to identify how they can be a leader in developing an inclusive and engaging community.

As you spend time in McMaster’s residence community, you will develop the following abilities in this area:

  • Demonstrate consideration of multiple perspectives in decision making
  • Identify aspects of your own identity (e.g. values, beliefs, and social and cultural identities)
  • Identify the characteristics of healthy relationships including consent

 

We provide opportunities to build student resilience, competence, personal capacity, and skills relating to their health and wellbeing.

As you spend time in McMaster’s residence community, you will develop the following abilities in this area:

  • Identify behaviours that impact their physical and mental health
  • Describe the benefits of engaging in regular physical activity
  • Identify the impacts of substance use and abuse
  • Identify resources that support health and wellbeing

 

We support students in the development of leadership, academic and career capabilities. Through increased capacity students will have the confidence to set and achieve their goals.

As you spend time in McMaster’s residence community, you will develop the following abilities in this area:

  • Identify opportunities to develop career skills
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills
  • Describe a strategy for goal setting
  • Demonstrate leadership skills within their community
  • Identify strategies for academic success

 

We offer meaningful opportunities for students to develop connections with on and off campus communities. Students will consider the issues identified as priorities by communities and perform service for the public good.

As you spend time in McMaster’s residence community, you will develop the following abilities in this area:

  • Describe the importance of community involvement
  • Develop a sense of belonging with their communities (e.g. McMaster or Hamilton)
