2021-2022 Eligibility Criteria for Residence

Residences will be open for the 2021-2022 academic year. The residence application is now closed but incoming first-year students are invited to apply and will be added to the residence waitlist.

Students can now log on to the Residence Portal to start their Residence Application and will be added to the waitlist.

While the residence application is now closed, all incoming first-year students who have not yet applied are welcome to complete the residence application and will be added to a waitlist.

Prior to the June 1, 2021 residence deadline, students meeting the below criteria were eligible to apply for a guaranteed or conditionally guaranteed space in residence. All students who apply after this deadline are added to the waitlist and will be contacted if a space becomes available.

Students approved for residence will be required to follow modified Residence Expectations, including the following additions:

  • A strict no guest policy will be in place.
  • Masks and/or facial coverings will be required in all public residence spaces, including common rooms, elevators, hallways, lobbies, etc.
  • No large gatherings will be permitted and physical distancing will be required.
  • Use of large common areas, including game rooms, lounges and other gathering spaces will be very limited.

Note: If the University offers in-person classes for Fall 2021 term and/or Winter 2022 term, residence occupancy may be increased resulting in the assignment of new students in their room, apartment or suite at the discretion of the University.

CRITERIA - PHASE 1

Only students within this eligibility criteria will be considered for a phase 1 space in residence. Eligibility criteria includes:

  • a first-year undergraduate* 105 Visa students as verified by the University record.
  • a first-year undergraduate* 105 student living outside of Ontario (but inside Canada) as verified by the University record.
  • a first-year undergraduate student with an approved deferral from 2020-2021 as verified by the University record and/of Faculty Office.
  • select scholarship recipients (Braithwaite Scholarship, Loran Foundation and Killam Foundation)

Please note that application availability dates and deadlines vary between application types. 

If you’re an international student, COVID-19 has made life a lot more complicated, whether you’re studying remotely in your home country or travelling to Canada to study here. We get it — and we’re offering a residence guarantee to make the transition as smooth as possible.

  • Eligible students received a personalized email from the University.
  • Students are required to complete a residence application and submit an $800 deposit by June 1, 2021 by 4PM EDT. Deposits are only accepted through the online residence application using Visa, Mastercard or Amex.
  • Students will be required to quarantine for the mandatory 14-day period upon arrival.
  • This offer is conditional upon your ability to arrive on-campus to quarantine between August 3, 2021 – September 12, 2021.
  • A pro-rated daily rate will apply to quarantine arrivals up to August 30, the date of your residence room contract, in additional to the regular residence room fee. Fees are charged to your Mosaic student account.
  • Meals during quarantine will be provided and deducted from the meal plan selection on your residence application (to be selected at a later date). These meals will be delivered to your residence room door.
  • Students will receive a 50% refund if they cancel on or before July 5, 2021.
  • If you do not arrive to campus by September 13, 2021, you will forfeit your room and it will be assigned to another student on the waiting list.
  • Students who miss the deadline to secure their guarantee or students receiving offers to McMaster after June 1, 2021 may apply to the waiting list.
  • Students who are not successful in receiving a residence room and/or students arriving in Canada after September 12, 2021 will have access to the Hotel Quarantine Program and McMatch, McMaster’s student housemate connector for off-campus accommodations. Off-campus accommodations can be found at offcampus.mcmaster.ca/available-properties/.
  • Eligible students received a personalized email from the University.
  • Availability is first-come, first-served to a maximum number of 100 spaces. When 100 spaces are secured, Housing will no longer accept applications.
  • Students are required to complete an online residence application on the Residence Portal and submit a $600 deposit by May 14, 2021 by 12noon EDT. Deposits are only accepted through the online residence application using Visa, Mastercard or Amex.
  • As per Ontario Chief Medical Officer, Out of Province Students are strongly recommended to quarantine upon arrival to Ontario. As such, Out of province students will be required to quarantine upon their arrival to McMaster.
  • This offer is conditional upon your ability to arrive on-campus to between August 3, 2021 – September 12, 2021.
  • A pro-rated daily rate will apply to early arrivals up to August 30, the date of your residence room contract, in additional to the regular residence room fee. Fees are charged to your Mosaic student account.
  • Meals during quarantine will be provided and deducted from the meal plan selection on your residence application (to be selected later). These meals will be delivered to your residence room door.
  • Students will receive a 50% refund if they cancel on or before July 5, 2021.

  • Students will receive a 50% refund if they cancel on or before July 5, 2021.
  • For students who have an approved deferral AND fall under criteria A (105 Visa) or B (105 Out-of-Province), please refer to the above criteria for further details on additional conditions and requirements.

Admission in Phase 1 will be available to the recipients of the following scholarships only:

  • Braithwaite Scholarships
  • Loran Foundation
  • Killam Foundation

Students with scholarships not listed above are invited to apply for residence at a later application phase.

Application Process:

  • Students will receive a 50% refund if they cancel on or before July 5, 2021.
  • Room assignment are conditional on their ability to arrive for on-campus quarantine between August 3, 2021 – September 12, 2021 (6-week arrival window).
  • A pro-rated daily rate ($38/day) of their residence fee will apply to quarantine arrivals between August 3, 2021 to August 30 (start of Residence Agreement Term)
  • Student meal plans will also be charged for the 3 meals/day by Hospitality Services (price TBD)
  • As of September 13, 2021 vacant rooms will be assigned to other waitlisted students.
  • Post September 12 arrivals will have access to Hotel Quarantine Program and off campus support programs such as McMatch and Landlord Listing Service.
  • Waitlist options for Post September 12 arrivals will be available.

CRITERIA - PHASE 2

Phase 2 eligibility includes the following student groups:

  • 101 Visa – Conditional Guarantee Students
  • MELD – McMaster English Language Development program – Conditional Guarantee Students

  • Required to complete application and make a $600 deposit by June 1, 2021 by 4pm ET.
  • Students will receive a 50% refund if they cancel on or before July 5, 2021.
  • Guarantee is conditional on their ability to arrive for on-campus quarantine between August 3, 2021 – September 12, 2021 (6-week arrival window).
  • If the student is not already in/remains in Ontario, the guarantee is conditional on their ability to arrive for on-campus to quarantine between August 3, 2021 – September 12, 2021 (6-week arrival window).
  • A pro-rated daily rate ($38/day) of their residence fee will apply to quarantine arrivals between August 3, 2021 to August 30 (start of Residence Agreement Term)
  • Student meal plans will also be charged for the 3 meals/day by Hospitality Services (price TBD)

CRITERIA – PHASE 3

Phase 3 eligibility includes the following student groups:

  • 101 Domestic – Admission Average of 92% or higher

Please read below for more details about the application and deposit deadlines, and conditions required to secure and maintain your residence application.

  • Students with a 92% admission average or higher receive an offer of guaranteed residence.
  • Application open from May 13 at 1pm ET to June 1, 2021 at 4pm ET.
  • Required to complete application and make a $600 deposit by June 1, 2021 by 4pm ET.
  • Students will receive a 50% refund if they cancel on or before July 5, 2021.
  • Students who miss this deadline will forfeit their residence guarantee and may apply to the wait list.
  • Students below the admission average are not guaranteed residence.
  • Non-guaranteed students may apply to the waiting list.
  • Application for the wait list open from May 13 at 1pm ET.
  • Students who apply to the wait list before June 1, 2021 at 4pm ET, will be ordered according to their admission average.
  • Students who apply after this deadline will be ordered at the bottom of the existing wait list by date and time of application submission.

*Note: Students must be registered in at least 9 units per term to be considered full-time. Only students who are entering directly from high school into their first-year of undergraduate studies are eligible for residence. Transfer students, mature students, and graduate students are encouraged to look for alternative housing options in the McMaster community.
