January Move-In 2022

Application Criteria

All first-year, second-year and exchange students who are fully vaccinated with an approved COVID-19 vaccine are welcome to apply for a residence space. Students will be able to move in early January 2022.

Please note that McMaster is no longer offering on-campus quarantine. Any students who require quarantine upon arrival to Canada, must do so off-campus.

What to keep in mind before you apply for residence:

    • All students should expect to share their room with a roommate.
    • All students in residence are required to purchase a meal plan.
    • A strict no-guest policy is in place, which means you cannot let anyone who does not live in your residence building or from off-campus into your residence building or room.
    • Masks are required in all public residence spaces, including common rooms, elevators, hallways, lobbies, etc.
    • No large gatherings are permitted and physical distancing is required.
    • Use of large common areas, including game rooms, lounges and other gathering spaces is very limited.

International Students

We welcome fully-vaccinated international students who will be travelling to Canada for the Winter 2022 term to apply for a January 2022 move-in.

Student Status Proof to Upload to the Residence Portal
Students who are fully vaccinated with Health Canada approved vaccines
  • Upload proof of vaccination and MacCheck approval to the Residence Portal.
Students who are considered fully vaccinated with non-Health Canada or WHO approved vaccines (i.e. Sinovac or Sinopharm)
  • Provide proof on the Residence Portal that you have completed off-campus quarantine in Canada and are considered fully vaccinated.
  • Have proof of a negative test result on Day 8 of quarantine.

Room Type

In McMaster’s residence buildings, over 70% of rooms are doublesIf you apply to residence, you should expect to have a roommate. 

If you have a specific accommodation need in your application, the Residence team will do their best to meet your accommodation, however no student is guaranteed a single room.

Roommate requests will be accepted! Have your friend apply and then contact to confirm that you’d like to live together!

Residence Fees

Students on the waitlist who are provided an offer will be required secure their residence space with a $600 deposit, which must be paid within 24-48 hours of receiving the offer. The fee for residence will be added to your Student Account and is a full one-time payment.

You can view fees on our Residence Fees page, however the cost of residence will be half of the overall academic year cost, as it will be pro-rated based on your winter move-in date.

Your residence fee includes:

  • Your accommodations
  • Access to residence facilities, including study rooms, common area kitchens and laundry facilities (laundry is a separate cost)
  • Wireless Internet in each residence building (more information)

Meal Plans

Students are required to purchase a meal plan when staying in residence.

You can select the plan that is right for you on the Hospitality websiteAs you will be moving in during the winter term, costs will be pro-rated, which means costs may be less than displayed on the Hospitality website. Your meal plan fees will be added to your Student Account.

Cancellation and Withdrawal Policy

Students who choose to withdraw from residence must do so by the refund cancellation deadline to qualify for a partial deposit refund of $300.

Cleaning Procedures in Residence

Enhanced cleaning and disinfecting procedures have been put in place to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. This includes disinfecting high touch point areas three times daily.

All buildings and rooms are thoroughly cleaned before students move in. The custodial teams are also in residence buildings every day to clean the communal washrooms and common areas.
