McMaster University Housing Policy
The purpose of this housing policy is to outline Housing and Conference Services’ principles and commitments to student housing and the resources available to students with respect to their on and off-campus housing needs.
This policy is prepared in compliance with a Directive from the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities dated July 15, 2024, under Bill 185, Cutting Red Tape to Build More Homes Act, requiring the publication of Student Housing Policies by Postsecondary Institutions.
Scope
This policy applies to both undergraduate and graduate student housing provided by McMaster University Housing and Conference Services.
Policy
McMaster University Housing and Conference Services will:
- Provide Information and Resources:
- Offer comprehensive information on available housing and supporting resources through dedicated websites, administrative offices, and support staff.
- Maintain up-to-date and accessible online platforms for housing information, including housing.mcmaster.ca and offcampus.mcmaster.ca.
- Diverse Housing Options:
- Provide a range of housing options to accommodate the diverse needs of the student population, including family housing and accessible accommodations for students with disabilities.
- Ensure housing options reflect the local community environment and context and develop community partnerships where appropriate.
- Inclusive and Supportive Environment:
- Offer inclusive housing options that cater to various student needs and promote a sense of community.
- Maintain a professional and para-professional staff team to provide personal support, information, and guidance to students.
- Community Development and Co-Curricular Opportunities:
- Provide community development and co-curricular opportunities to enhance students’ intellectual engagement, citizenship, and self-awareness.
- Off-Campus Housing Resources:
- Offer off-campus housing resources, including a housing listing service with a database of locally available off-campus houses and apartments for students to rent.
- Provide housing search support, lease support, and education on tenant rights and responsibilities, off-campus safety and security, and other resources.
- Offer information on short-term/sublet accommodation opportunities and direct students to financial aid and assistance programs.
- Commitment to International Students:
- Guarantee housing options for incoming first-year undergraduate students and provided application and deposit deadlines are met and the applicable academic average required for entrance is achieved.
Definitions
- Housing and Conference Services: A department within McMaster University responsible for university housing operations and the provisions outlined in this policy.
- Residence Life & Admission Services: Units within Housing and Conference Services accountable for admission to and student support.
- Off Campus Housing Office: A unit within Housing and Conference Services responsible for the support services for students seeking off-campus housing.
