Room Type and Roommate Assignment

Room Type Assignments

  • Room assignments are determined by random lottery
  • Room type preferences are submitted on the online application and are considered in the lottery process but not guaranteed. A minimum of three and a maximum of five preferences can be listed.
  • Preferences for room type, lifestyle theme and one roommate request can be indicated on the application.
  • Every residence has unique features, but each room type is consistent across campus.
  • All residence buildings are smoke free.
  • Most first year students live in double or bunk and loft triple rooms with roommates.
  • Students will receive an email confirmation of their residence assignment in early July.
  • Room assignments are final. Residence Admissions does not accept requests for changes in room assignments

Roommate Requests for First Year Students

  • Most first year students live in double or bunk and loft triple rooms with roommates.
  • Profile questions on the online application are used to match you with roommate(s).
  • We guarantee one roommate request if:
    • both students have guaranteed residence offers.
    • met the residence application and deposit deadline (dates).
    • requested each other as roommates on their online application and,
    • ranked their profile responses and room type preferences identically
  • A valid roommate request WILL over-ride requests for single bed-space room types.
  • Groups of three or four students wishing to live together in a triple-style or quad room only may contact Residence Admissions for further information at:resadmissions@mcmaster.ca Please Note: This option does not extend to apartment or suite-style accommodations
