The Affinity Group Program is a student-led, identity-affirming initiative within Residence Life that fosters belonging and leadership for equity-deserving students. Rooted in the Indigenous practice of Learning Circles, it provides monthly gatherings for BIPOC, 2SLGBTQIA+, and disabled students, led by returning Community Advisors who share these identities.
With over 50% of McMaster undergraduates identifying as racialized, 11% registered with Accessibility Services, and growing national trends in gender and sexual diversity, the need for inclusive, peer-led spaces in residence is critical. This program addresses gaps in belonging and student engagement particularly for underrepresented groups and aligns with McMaster’s institutional priorities around Inclusive Excellence.
