Roommate Requests for First-Year Students
Most first-year students live in traditional double a with roommate. During our residence application, we ask you to answer a series of questions and create a profile for you so that we can match you with the best room roommate! We know that if you and a friend are both coming to McMaster you may want to share a room.
We guarantee that you will be rooming with one roommate of your choosing if both you and your desired roommate:
- have guaranteed residence offers.
- meet the residence application and deposit deadline.
- requested each other as roommates on their online application and,
- ranked their profile responses identically.
If you and a friend submit a valid roommate request by the deadline this will over-ride any request for single bed-space room types such as a Single Room, Single Room with Access to Single-User Washroom, Single Room with Ensuite Washroom, Single Room with Connected Shared Washroom or Super Single Room with Connected Shared Washroom.

How to Request 4 Roommates for a Traditional Quad
Groups of 4 guaranteed students who wish to live together in a traditional quad room type, must email resadmissions@mcmaster.ca with all your names and McMaster Student ID numbers by 4:00 p.m. EDT on June 01, 2023. If all students are guaranteed residence and submit their requests by the deadline, we will consider your request for a traditional quad style room.
Each guaranteed student within the group must email their individual request including their name and McMaster student ID number, and the names and McMaster Student ID numbers of their roommates.
This request only applies to traditional quad style rooms. We do not consider these requests for 4 person roommates in suites in Mary E. Keyes Residence, apartments in Bates Residence, or room types in connected shared washrooms such as PGCLL.
We have a limited number of traditional quad room types, which means if we receive more multiple roommate requests than bedspaces available, we will run a lottery to determine which group of students will receive the quad style room.
We also encourage all students submitting a 4-person roommate request to consider filling out one roommate request on their online application. If you are unsuccessful in receiving a quad style room with your group, then you have a chance to be placed with one roommate of your choice in a double room.
